As a Lab Operations Specialist on the Lab Operation team, you will ensure the smooth and efficient operation of our laboratory facilities by playing a key role in maintaining laboratory equipment, managing inventory, and implementing safety protocols.

About You

The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of managing lab operations in a fast-paced biotech setting, demonstrating proficiency in maintaining lab equipment, overseeing lab supplies inventory, and implementing standard operating procedures (SOPs). Key skills include strong organizational abilities, meticulous attention to detail, effective communication, and the capability to troubleshoot technical issues swiftly. The role demands a proactive approach to improving lab efficiency and supporting scientific teams to drive innovative research and development efforts.

Position Responsibilities

• Inventory Management:
• Receive packages daily and update receipts in purchasing system
• Assist with shipping orders out as needed
• Manage laboratory inventory, including reagents, consumables, and other lab supplies
• Monitor inventory levels, place orders for replenishment, and maintain accurate records of stock
• Implement inventory control procedures (i.e. Kanban Inventory Management) to minimize waste and optimize cost efficiency.
• Run autoclave and glasswash as needed
• Equipment Maintenance
• Conduct regular water changes of water baths and incubators
• Assist with regular incubator & biosafety cabinet cleanings
• Partner with Equipment Team to support other equipment as needed
• Safety Compliance:
• Manage waste streams, including biohazard and chemical waste
• Collaborate with science staff on adherence to safety protocols and guidelines to maintain a safe working environment for laboratory personnel
• Monitor and report lab safety violations to Lab Management
• Partner with EHS to provide training to laboratory staff on proper handling of hazardous materials and emergency procedures
• Facilities Management:
• Collaborate with Lab Management to implement lab systems that create operational readiness, enhance safety, and improve efficiency in laboratory activities
• Oversee the cleanliness and organization of laboratory spaces, including shared work areas and storage rooms
• Collaborate with Facilities and Equipment Team to address infrastructure issues and ensure compliance with building regulations.
• Documentation and Reporting:
• Maintain accurate documentation of equipment maintenance, inventory transactions, safety inspections, and waste manifests
• Generate reports on laboratory operations metrics such as equipment uptime, inventory utilization, and safety compliance
• Analyze data to identify trends and areas for improvement, and propose actionable recommendations
  

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in a relevant scientific field (e.g., biology, chemistry, bioengineering) with at least 1 year work experience or equivalent experience
• Prior experience in laboratory operations, preferably in a biotechnology or life sciences industry
• Strong technical skills with the ability to troubleshoot laboratory equipment and perform basic repairs
• Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
• Knowledge of California State and Federal safety regulations and best practices in laboratory operations
• Effective communication skills and the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams
• Attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining high-quality standards in all aspects of laboratory operations
• Effective communication skills with the ability to interact with staff at all levels of the organization.
• Proactive mindset with a strong commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement
• Flexibility to respond to emergencies or off-hours maintenance needs as required
• Proficiency in computer applications such as Microsoft Office andGoogle Suite
  
  

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous biotech startup experience
• Experience with laboratory information management systems (LIMS) and inventory management software.
• Certification in laboratory safety or facility management
• Familiarity with regulatory requirements (e.g., FDA, ISO) applicable to biotechnology research and development
