About the Role
Whisper Aero is seeking a skilled and creative Mechanical Designer to conceptualize, prototype, and build new products. This candidate will work within a multidisciplinary team and take direction from the design lead. They will be responsible for creating designs that are safe and meet performance, cost, and reliability targets. They will own the mechanical design of their components from concept through production including 3D models, 2D drawings, BOM management, tolerance stacks, material selection, and manufacturing. They will use rapid prototyping tools and testing to prove the viability of their designs. The successful candidate will be someone who is comfortable working with their hands as well as working at a computer. They will be eager to ask questions and build new insights into how things work.
What You'll Do
- Own the design and manufacturing of mechanical components and subsystems for electric propulsors, electric aircraft, and ground support equipment using SolidWorks software
- Create engineering drawings, models, and assemblies in CAD and maintain the BOM
- Develop prototypes and mechanical assemblies, tooling, and ground support equipment
- Host design reviews and incorporate design feedback from other teams including mechanical, structures, and aerodynamics
Basic Qualifications
- U.S. Person status is required, as this position may access export controlled data
- At least 4 years demonstrated experience in a hands-on development environment
- Proficiency with SolidWorks or similar 3D CAD software
- Demonstrated experience creating operational prototypes with minimal oversight
- Demonstrated experience with hand tools, 3D printing, mechanical assembly, soldering, and crimping
- Demonstrated experience drafting 2D drawings and communicating these to suppliers for quote and manufacturing
- Strong knowledge of various manufacturing processes such as CNC machining, injection molding, compression molding, metal injection molding, sheet metal fabrication, or additive manufacturing
- Proficiency for creating and maintaining documentation
- Ability to balance and prioritize conflicting design constraints
- Effective written and oral communication skills
- A willingness to work on tasks outside your primary job functions
Bonus Qualifications
- Experience in developing outdoor power equipment tools
- Experience with SolidWorks PDM
- Experience integrating motors, controllers, and batteries
- Experience balancing rotating machinery
- Experience in R&D space or product development
- Experience with mold making or model making
- Proficiency with Arduino or Raspberry Pi programming
- Familiarity with GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) principles
