About the role
The Capital Markets team sits at the crossroads of daily business processes and new feature development for the in-house portfolio management, custody, and trading platforms. As our Strategy and Operations Manager on Capital Markets, you are excited to use both your capital market expertise and quantitative rigor to propose, coordinate, and drive key projects relating to the ongoing research and development of the Betterment trading systems. To be successful in this role, you will be both process-oriented and results-focused. We’ll look to you to be iterative and a successful collaborator, bringing innovation and efficiency to our systems while ensuring continual compliance with relevant regulatory frameworks.
This role is based out of our NYC office. Below we've reflected the base salary range we would offer for this position. Actual salaries may vary depending on factors including but not limited to location, experience, and performance. The range listed is just one component of Betterment’s total compensation package for employees.
- New York City: $130,000 - $155,000

For jobs based out of our NYC HQ, we require in-office attendance Tuesday through Thursday, weekly.
A day in the life
- Help steward Betterment’s order management and execution systems with any required oversight and intervention throughout market hours, inclusive of all required regulatory reporting
- Identify new trading initiatives and own the project cycle from business case, requirements, planning, design, testing, and implementation
- Refine and scale business reporting metrics to support rapid expansion across multiple business lines,including; execution quality, trade volumes, and cost analytics to assist our team and our Advice & Investing team on future endeavors
- Identify and deliver front to back platform improvements across both production trading and research environments
- Maintain cutting edge awareness of an ever evolving regulatory environment
- Manage existing external counterparty relationships as well as develop and onboard new partners.
- Build strategic and trusted relationships across the organization, particularly with Betterment’s Advice & Investing, Product, and Engineering teams.
What we’re looking for
- Experience in financial services (trading strongly preferred), software, or consulting, contributing to the development of complex systems, analysis, particularly with respect to financial technology products.
- A passion for capital markets with a strong interest in conducting R&D, along with a solid understanding of the regulatory landscape, including familiarity with FINRA and SEC regulations
- Some experience with project management and demonstrated success at collaborative deliverables
- Technical expertise, with coding experience, in data manipulation, identifying inefficiencies and opportunities, implementing practical solutions, and optimizing processes. Coding knowledge in SQL or Python is strongly preferred.
- The ability to pivot quickly and effectively, coupled with excellent communication skills to engage and align stakeholders throughout the process.
- Series 7 or the ability to obtain the license within 3 months of hire. (Series 24 preferred)

What happens next

In the interview process, we’ll look to learn more about your skills, experiences, capabilities, and motivators. Many of our questions will be aimed at understanding how you might operate here at Betterment. Depending on the role, we may ask you to complete a case study exercise or technical assessments, as we want to collect a robust set of data points to better inform our decisions.
On average, it takes us around 3-5 weeks to make a hiring decision, depending on your availability and sense of urgency. As a best practice, we aim to interview at least 2-3 final round candidates before making a hiring decision.
