About the role

Betterment’s mission is to empower people to do what’s best for their money so that they can live better. As a Product Manager on our Smart Servicing team, you’ll be responsible for driving the internal tooling strategy to support our operations and customer support teams. You’ll also keep a keen eye on improvements to high-touch customer-facing experiences to drive revenue growth while mitigating fraud risks.

You are an organized and detail-oriented product manager with experience working across web and mobile platforms. You are a natural collaborator and love being part of a cross-functional team. You relish rolling up your sleeves and explaining complex requirements to engineers, designers, and data analysts…and you also build strong relationships with your peers across the organization. You are masterful in prioritizing effectively and making tradeoffs while keeping internal stakeholders aligned and informed.

You are passionate about building a customer-centric business that will impart lasting change to the financial services industry.

This role is based out of our NYC office. Below we've reflected the base salary range we would offer for this position. Actual salaries may vary depending on factors including but not limited to location, experience, and performance. The range listed is just one component of Betterment’s total compensation package for employees.

  • New York City: $105,000 - $115,000

We offer a competitive equity package, health, dental and vision benefits, life and AD&D, short-term and long-term disability insurance, EAP, commuter and parking benefits FSA/HSA, and 401(k) with employer match as well as a flexible PTO policy. This job may also be eligible for variable compensation in the form of a company incentive bonus. For jobs based out of our NYC HQ, we require in office attendance Tuesday through Thursday, weekly.

A day in the life

  • Identify opportunities to improve Betterment’s existing customer experience, focusing on tools used by our teams regularly to provide a five-star customer experience and enhance operational efficiency
  • Implement and iterate on technical solutions to fraud management, working both with external vendors and internal data and engineering resources
  • Execute priorities flawlessly, working with design, engineering, analytics, and marketing to produce documentation and milestones that ensure your solutions reach our user base as efficiently as possible
  • Know the success metrics for your product area and build the tracking plan to support it; understand and communicate how the work that you’re prioritizing is helping drive those metrics
  • Develop a deep level of user empathy through product data, competitive analysis, and user research
  • Understand the financial pain points that Americans in our target market experience on a regular basis

What we’re looking for

You have a proven track record of feature delivery as a product manager and comparable team/project leader and are passionate about building experiences that customers love. You are innovative, able to craft a vision, define products, and thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative environment. Specifically, we think you’re well suited for this role if you have:

  • Always puts the customer first when making short and long-term product decisions
  • Demonstrated success at communicating, prioritizing, and balancing needs cross-functionally
  • Obsessive attention to detail and strong organizational skills in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to drive the implementation of alternative servicing channels
  • Strong analytical abilities with a passion for data-inspired decision making
  • Ability to build strong relationships across functions within an organization
  • A big plus: experience with high-consideration products and/or highly regulated industries

What happens next

In the interview process, we’ll look to learn more about your skills, experiences, capabilities, and motivators. Many of our questions will be aimed at understanding how you might operate here at Betterment. Depending on the role, we may ask you to complete a case study exercise or technical assessments, as we want to collect a robust set of data points to better inform our decisions.

On average, it takes us around 3-5 weeks to make a hiring decision, depending on your availability and sense of urgency. As a best practice, we aim to interview at least 2-3 final round candidates before making a hiring decision. Please note that, as we usually receive an overwhelming number of applications for open positions, we’re unable to offer individual feedback during the interview process.
