About the Role
In this role, you will own the Legal components of the Abnormal intellectual property (IP) strategy and execution. You will report directly to Abnormal’s VP, Head of Legal and will partner closely with the Abnormal Engineering, Product, Marketing and Operations teams to focus on developing and driving the legal strategy for Abnormal’s IP portfolio, including patent, trademark and copyright, as well issues around IP licensing, M&A, open source, litigation, technology licensing and more. You will provide pragmatic and business-minded legal support on IP matters to stakeholders at all levels of the company, while contributing to the planning and implementation of operational processes, platforms, and tools to scale our organization and IP portfolio, as we expand globally.

What you will do
In this role, you will own the Legal components of the Abnormal intellectual property (IP) strategy and execution
Collaborate with internal stakeholders and manage outside counsel to build and implement Abnormal’s global IP strategy, including developing and growing its patent, trademark and copyright portfolios
Engage in invention harvesting and patent prosecution, while ensuring strategic alignment of the portfolio
Manage prosecution of patent applications and other key filing obligations with the USPTO and other global institutions
Align Abnormal’s global trademark portfolio with business needs, including enforcement as needed
Guide Abnormal’s engineering and business teams through copyright issues
Prepare and deliver trainings on all aspects of IP
Provide support to legal team colleagues on IP related agreements, including working on partnerships/licensing opportunities and IP due diligence for corporate financing, M&A, and development as needed
Uplevel Abnormal’s open source compliance and licensing processes
Must Haves
At least 10 years of IP-focused legal experience, including leading IP strategy and litigation in a global law firm and/or technology company
Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering/science, biomedical engineering or equivalent
Juris Doctor degree and member in good standing of at least one U.S. state bar
Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office
Excellent academic credentials
Experience in the software industry, with machine learning and AI experience preferred
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Strong leadership skills
The confidence and ability to interact with senior executives, clients, and co-workers in a professional, collaborative, and positive manner
Not afraid to “roll up your sleeves” and work with details as well as the big picture
Demonstrated ability and strong experience with strategizing, overseeing, and managing patent preparation and prosecution of digital and software-enabled technologies
Strong experience with patent clearance/freedom-to-operate issues
Experience with negotiating technology agreements, including licenses and IP provisions
Nice to Have
MS degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or other related engineering field
Experience with big data, statistics and Machine Learning
Experience with algorithms and optimization
