The IT Systems Engineering team is seeking a Systems Engineer who is passionate about building-out systems management tools and processes to support highly-available and high-performing self-service private cloud environments.


This role is focused on Systems Optimization, Monitoring, Documentation, and Reporting. The ideal engineer is passionate about the benefits gained by a well-monitored and reactive infrastructure with self-healing capabilities. The role involves configuring the monitoring systems to alert on failures, backup/restore, planning DR strategies, documenting all aspects of the environment and providing usable reports to peers and management. 


In addition, this role contributes as a senior engineer on the team that oversees everything from datacenter and hardware, compute and storage virtualization, multi OS deployment and optimization, AD and access control, as well as building and managing environments, applications, and processes which support software development and testing, corporate web and database applications, secure mobile productivity, and a wide range of other mission-critical use cases. We are driven by continuous improvement, always seeking a better way of doing things, and having fun in the process.


Specific Objectives and Responsibilities:


Your First Six Months:

  • Learn the environment by reviewing docs and shadowing engineers on existing projects.
  • Analyze and enhance monitoring and troubleshooting tools.
  • Develop master project plan for tasks touching on: server monitoring, backup, documentation and disaster recovery.
  • Begin planning and implementation on existing projects backlog.

Six to Twelve Months and Beyond:

  • Identify and document System Admin processes for monitoring, backup and patching.
  • Implement automated workflows in System Center, SolarWinds, PowerShell or other environments and languages.
  • Work with System Engineering team to further develop and monitor system patching.
  • Identify candidate projects for 2019 Roadmap.

Key Challenges to Overcome:

  • Understanding the current architectures and identifying IT controlled assets in a complex network.
  • Develop centralized instrumentation for monitoring/gathering server and network metrics.
  • Provide technical expertise and mentoring for complex system configuration and troubleshooting.

Skills and Experience:

    • You have written systems management scripts with PowerShell or other scripting languages.

  • Required Technical Skills
    • Deep experience utilizing systems monitoring to monitor physical servers, virtual servers and storage.
    • Deep Windows (required) and Linux (desired) experience.
    • Managing and reporting on patching, monitoring, backup, performance, and availability.
    • Advanced infrastructure design, configuration, operation, and troubleshooting skills.
    • Experience in hypervisor and cluster configuration (VMware, Hyper-V), Private/Public Cloud central management, security, and self-service provisioning environments: Azure, AWS, Hyper-V, and VMware.
    • Experience managing backup/recovery for servers & virtualization.
  • Preferred Technical Skills
    • Experience using SolarWinds, Microsoft Systems Center Operations Manager, Azure Operations Management Suite, or other monitoring software, is desired.
    • Experience with CloudDyn, CloudHealth, and/or CloudCheckr.
    • Storage technologies: SAN/NAS, Storage Spaces Direct.
